Safe Login A login that doesn't load any of your login items.
Safe Mode A start-up mode where MacBook Air doesn't load most of its behind-the-scenes
components.
single-link A DVI cable that uses one transmitter. See also dual-link.
S.M.A.R.T. Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. A technology that monit-
ors a number of hard drive parameters, including spin-up time, drive temperature, drive er-
rors, and bad sectors.
Smart Group A collection of contacts where each member has one or more things in com-
mon. Also, where the Contacts app automatically adds or deletes members as you add, edit,
and delete contacts. See also group.
Smart Mailbox A Mail folder that consolidates all messages that meet one or more condi-
tions. Also, where Mail automatically adds or deletes messages as you receive and delete
them.
SMTP authentication The requirement that you must log on to a provider's SMTP server to
confirm that you're the person sending the mail.
SMTP server The Simple Mail Transport Protocol server that an Internet service provider
uses to process outgoing e-mail messages.
spinning wait cursor The rainbow-colored spinning cursor that appears when the system
takes a long time to complete some task. Also called the spinning pizza and the spinning
beach ball of death.
spread To move two fingers apart on the MacBook Air trackpad. See also pinch.
SSID (Service Set Identifier) The name that identifies a network to Wi-Fi devices.
swap file The area of virtual memory that MacBook Air is actually using.
synchronization A process that ensures that data, such as contacts, e-mail accounts, and
events on MacBook Air, is the same as the data on other devices, such as an iPhone or iPad.
