In-Depth Information
12.9 This dialog appears when you shut down an application that started earlier with Safe Relaunch.
If the preferences file isn't the problem (that is, the application keeps crashing even after a Safe Relaunch), use
the following troubleshooting steps, in this order:
1. Restart MacBook Air.
2. Install an update for the software if one is available.
3. If it's a third-party application, reinstall the application.
Before you get too involved in troubleshooting a program crash, consider a simpler explanation. Does the crash al-
ways occur when you're working with a particular file? If so, there's an excellent chance that the problem lies not
with the application, but with the file. If the file contains important data, and you can work with it for a time before
the crash occurs, copy the data and paste it into a new file. Then trash the old file.
A program won't start
Occasionally you'll try to start a program and nothing happens. If you clicked a Dock icon to launch the applic-
ation, all you see is the icon endlessly (and, eventually, maddeningly) bouncing up and down. This happened to
me once when I tried to launch iWeb on a brand-new iMac!
If this happens, try the following fixes, in this order:
1. Restart MacBook Air.
2. Install an update for the software if one is available. (This solved my iWeb problem.)
3. Delete the application's preferences file. I explain this process in Chapter 11.
4. If it's a third-party application, reinstall it.
You Can't Empty the Trash
When you attempt to empty the Trash, you may receive an error message, such as the one shown in Figure
12.10. To solve this problem, either click Remove All Items in the dialog or press and hold the Option key
while you choose the Empty Trash command.
12.10 You might see this dialog when you try to empty the Trash.
