In-Depth Information
of cryptographers' role as designers of the security protocols that will
mediate relationships over networks. In a material world, resources mate-
rial, perceptual, cognitive are unevenly distributed. Different models will
integrate different abstractions of these resources, different assumptions
about their distributions. As a design goal, “security” might then hold dif-
ferent meanings for different people, meanings that could no longer be
understood as self-evident but instead as themselves worthy of inquiry and
debate. To conclude this topic, then, I retrace some of our steps to bring
us back to a debate where the terms of an important security protocol—
voting—were contested and scrutinized for the entire world to see.
