Going to the show by El or bus
You have several public transportation options when stepping out on
a budget. Bus and El (train/subway) rides cost $1.75 plus 25¢ for trans-
fers. For more information on Chicago's public transportation system,
see Chapter 3.
• Chicago Theatre: Green, purple, orange, or brown line El to State
and Lake, or State Street bus (no. 2, 6, 10, 11, 29, 36, 44, 62, or
146) to corner of State and Lake.
• Ford Center for the Performing Arts: Green, purple, orange, or
brown line El to Randolph, or State Street bus (no. 2, 6, 10, 11, 29,
36, 44, 62, or 146) to corner of Randolph and State.
• Goodman Theatre: Green, purple, orange, or brown line El to Ran-
dolph, or State Street bus (no. 2, 6, 11, 29, 36, 44, 62, or 146) to cor-
ner of State and Randolph, and walk one block west to Dearborn.
• Shubert Theatre: Red line El to Monroe, or State Street bus (no.

• Steppenwolf Theatre Company: Red line El to North and
Clybourne, or bus no. 33 or 41 to corner of North and Halsted.
• Lyric Opera of Chicago: Metra train to Northwestern station, or

Take the Madison Street bus (no. 14, 20, 56, 131, or 157) to the cor-
ner of Madison and Wacker.
• Petrillo Music Shell: Green, purple, brown, or orange line El to
Adams, or the Michigan Avenue bus (no. 3, 4, 60, 145, 147, or 151)

Chicago Theatre This 1920s music palace has been reborn as an all-purpose
entertainment venue, hosting everything from pop acts and magicians to stand-
up comedy. The theater also hosted a long run of Joseph and the Technicolor
Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond. 175 N. State St. (at Lake St.). & 312/443-1130.

Ford Center for the Performing Arts/Oriental Theatre and the Cadillac
Palace Theatre Late 1990s renovations of these opulent theaters inevitably
required corporate sponsorship—in this case, from car companies—transforming
them into the Cadillac Palace and the awkwardly named Ford Center for the Per-
forming Arts/Oriental Theatre. Both book major touring shows and are well
