Attendance went up 400% here in a
single year with the glass sculpture
exhibit by artist Dave Chihuly. The
jury is still out on if the exposure
from that show will have a residual
effect on attendance, but chances are,
you won't be alone. Inside, check out
the Elizabeth Morse Genius Chil-
dren's Garden, where exhibits show a
giant bee pollinating an enormous
flower and demonstrate how the sun's
rays spark photosynthesis in a plant
leaf. A digging area (consisting of a
huge pile of dirt and digging toys),
waterfall, and slide from the second-
story mezzanine (along with the fact
that the plants here can be touched)
make this a great hands-on adventure
for kids.
If You Have a Sitter
If you've managed to arrange for
some couple time, book yourself a
romantic table for two at one of
Chicago's great grown-up restau-
rants. A sleek, non-kid-friendly spot
is Café des Architectes, located in
the Sofitel, 20 E. Chestnut St., at
Rush Street ( & 312/324-4000 ).
The modern and elegant decor
combines shades of purple with
white leather banquettes. The food
is modern French, and the service
is solicitous. Specialties include a
starter of grilled shrimp over bright
purple, beet-infused couscous. One
wonderfully unique entree is the
melt-in-your-mouth butterfish,
caught off the coasts of Portugal
and France and flown in daily from
Europe. If you're single, head to the
Art Institute and linger over the
Impressionists, then head outdoors
to the cafe for a leisurely glass of
wine and a sandwich while you
