formation, Join will use the median points between the two tracks for the overlapping portion. Join should be
used to join two tracks that operated on the same pattern and represent the same point in space.
Getting Good Tracks
If you use the provided footage and set up a new track as described previously, you will probably find that your
initialattemptattrackingitdoesnotgowell.

showsthefirsttrackIdidonthisfootage,whichfailed
after successfully tracking only six frames. Indeed, this footage is not the simplest footage to track. There are a
number of challenging characteristics of the footage, probably the biggest one being the fairly quick movement
of the camera in parts.
The quickest way to get a huge improvement in tracking is to activate Prepass, as shown in
Figure 10-9
.
Don't forget to make this change on the Properties shelf to change the selected track. You might also want to
change it on the Tool shelf, to ensure that Prepass is always checked for future tracks. In my work, I have so far
not identified any situation where it's better not to have Prepass selected. I've seen some significant slowdown
in tracking when dealing with 5K footage, but the slowdown is well worth the improvement in tracking.
