Chapter 10
Advanced 3D/Video Compositing
Some of the most exciting recent advances in Blender have centered on the brand-new Clip Editor, the devel-
opment of which has been a central goal during the production of the latest Blender Foundation Open Movie,
Tears of Steel (formerly known as Project Mango). The Clip Editor includes advanced camera and object-track-
ing functionality, as well as dedicated masking tools that greatly improve on the methods described in Chapter 9,
“Compositing with Nodes.” Taken together, these capabilities have catapulted Blender into being a viable stand-
alone VFX tool. For anyone interested in incorporating CG content into live-action video, these tools are vital.
In this chapter, you will learn to
• Track camera movement in the Movie Clip Editor
• Composite 3D content into camera-tracked video
• Use masking in the Clip Editor
Camera Tracking and the Movie Clip
Editor
The newest addition to the suite of Blender Editor window types is the Movie Clip Editor (from here on “Clip
Editor”), which enables a variety of intensive operations on moving video clips. In the Clip Editor, you can set
up camera and object tracks, adjust the effect of camera distortion, and create masks that can be used in the com-
positor. Access the Clip Editor by selecting it from the window type header menu, as shown in Figure 10-1 .
