The Sculpting Process
Sculpting, like painting a picture, is a gradual process that does not lend itself to rigid step-by-step instruction.
This section describes the process in a roughly chronological order, but you should consider this section to be a
collection of guidelines, techniques, and suggestions that will help you to get a clearer idea of how to progress
rather than a strict series of instructions to follow. Take special note of the figures shown, in particular such
values as brush size and strength at the various points in the sculpting process.
Roughing Out the Shapes
The SculptDraw tool is used to push or pull the mesh surface directly toward or away from the viewport view
axis. This is a good brush to start with for roughing out the basic shapes of your sculpture.
1. To begin, set your brush to values like those shown in Figure 3-18 . The brush is set to Subtract, with
a Radius value of 62 and a Strength value of .25. X symmetry is activated. X-axis symmetrical editing is
similar in its effect to mirroring in Edit mode. In fact, the model is not perfectly symmetrical. Later, you
will deactivate symmetrical editing and refine the whole sculpture.
