In-Depth Information
A buddy and I were talking recently about how much better the Develop
module's Basic panel controls are in Lightroom 4 (the quality is dramatically
better), but we both said that if there was one thing we missed from
Lightroom 3, it was the Fill Light slider. Even though it was kind of over
the top, if you really increased the amount a lot, it did have a certain
“look” to it, and every once in a while, I miss being able to push things
that far. Well, if you miss it, too, I came up with this workaround.
Mixing the Old
Lightroom 3 Fill Light
with the New
Lightroom 4 Power
Step One:
If you edited the image in an earlier ver-
sion of Lightroom, then you'll already be
using the old 2010 process version, so the
Fill Light slider will be there. But, if you
just imported this image into Lightroom 4,
then go to the Camera Calibration panel
in the Develop Module, and from the
Process pop-up menu, choose 2010 (as
shown here), and now when you return
to the Basic panel, the old sliders from
Lightroom 3 will be visible (including the
Fill Light slider).
Step Two:
Go ahead and process the image the
way you want using the Fill Light slider
(remember, if you crank it up too far, like
I did here to +90, things will tend to look
washed out, so bring up the Blacks slider
a little bit, too—just enough so it doesn't
look washed out, like I did here where
I increased it to +10).
