In-Depth Information
seeds they have saved, or are commercial seeds allowed? For new gardeners, it might be easiest to just have
them bring commercial seed. Many of them might be new to the concept of seeds in general and you don't
want to scare them off because they haven't yet had the chance to save their own seeds.
Before
Determine what the desired outcome of your seed swap should be.
Secure space and check availability of convenient parking, transportation, and a place to hang coats.
Determine use. You will need tables, but do you also need chairs or a seating area for older participants?
Do you need a kid's area? Will there be coffee or other refreshments?
Advertise the event; include date, time, and location.
Let people know the rules of engagement, including what kinds of seeds are okay to bring and how much
information they have to provide for seeds they may have saved that don't come with commercial pack-
aging.
Recruit helpers.
Invite key garden leaders and strong volunteers to help with the mechanics of the swap and to answer any
questions that might come up about the garden program.
Identify expert food gardeners or seed-saving enthusiasts.
Invite Master Gardeners or other garden experts in your area. (Note: Let the Master Gardeners know
you're talking about food gardening. Don't assume because they are Master Gardeners they understand
growing food. I know it sounds strange, but trust me on this one.)
Things to consider:
Is this a chance for education on a relevant topic such as genetically engineered vs. hybrid vs. heirloom
seeds?
Is this a chance to have a demonstration on seed saving or seed cleaning, or something similar?
Is this a chance to have a speaker?
Is this a chance to promote a seed company with whom you are partnering?
Is there a local seed library or community organization that would like to say a few words?
Do you want to have a raffle to raise money for your community garden?
Do you want to offer prizes, such as Seed Hoarder of the Year or Farthest Distance Traveled?
During
Provide good signage so the swap is easy to find.
