In-Depth Information
A great exercise to do with your community or partners is to explore a reciprocity map. This discussion
tool helps illustrate how the partnership will benefit everyone. To help your community brainstorm po-
tential partners, you can conduct this discussion in the now-familiar small-group breakout format. Or
you can use this tool as an exercise in meetings with potential partners. All the rules of communicating,
listening, and respect apply to partnerships, too. The more chances you have to truly interact and devel-
op your partnership face-to-face, the more successful that relationship will be in the long run.
The illustration on the following page show a sample reciprocity map, and illustrates how partner
relationships are a two-way street. In the sample, you'll see some defined benefits for each group. Your
partnerships will be completely different. This sample is only meant to get you thinking about what
you want from a partnership and how, by focusing on the benefits to both sides, the partnership is more
powerful and mutually beneficial.
As with community meetings, taking some time to work with your partners to fill out the reciprocity
map will create valuable dialogue and bonding that will serve as a strong foundation for your relation-
ship. Copy the accompanying blank template as a starting point.
Reciprocity maps illustrate mutual benefits between partners.
