model. Compared to most existing appearance features, the novel appearance
feature is less illumination dependent and less person dependent. An online
appearance model adaptation scheme is also introduced to improve the perfor-
mance in changing conditions. A facial expression recognition experiment has
been conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme in changing
conditions. The recognition performance is improved because of the reduced
dependency of the novel appearance feature and the online adaptation scheme.
