Data Mining
Also referred to as machine learning, data mining comes from the computer
science field and is a broad term that represents techniques used to discover
new information from existing data sets. For many experienced data
warehouse and business intelligence professionals, this may be a subject
that you are already familiar with.
For those who are not, the distinction is simple. Unlike more traditional
business intelligence projects, which merely summarize or aggregate data in
various slices, data mining uses specific algorithms to uncover data patterns
or trends that would otherwise not be apparent.
To better understand how this applies to big data, review in Table 12.1 some
of the more common types of data mining algorithms.
