Appendix. Materials
We used Enterococcus faecalis strains OG1X, OG1RF, OG1SSp. OG1X has an-
tibioticresistance gene for streptmycin. OG1X is a gene-deletion mutant for the
gelatinase that breaks down pheromone peptides. OG1RF has antibiotic resis-
tance for refampicin/fusidic acid. OG1SSp has antibiotic resistance for strept-
mycin/spectinomycin. E. faecalis strains were grown in Todd-Hewitt broth
(Difco Laboratories, Detroit, MI). The solid medium used was Todd-Hewitt
broth with 1.5% agar. The conjugative plasmid pCF10 contains the antibiotic
resistance gene for tetracycline. The conjugative plasmid pAM714, a deriva-
tive of pAD1, contains the erythromycin-resistance gene. Antibiotics were
used at the following concentrations: tetracycline, 10
µ
g/ml; erythromycin,
20
g/ml. Synthetic peptides
cCF10, cAD1, iCF10, and iAD1 were prepared at NikkaTechno service.
