Figure 12—Creating a personalized pop-out symbol selection
1.
Open Finder, and then hit SHIFT + COMMAND + G . In the dialog that appears,
type the following before clicking the Go button:
/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/INPUT METHODS/PRESSANDHOLD.APP/CONTENTS/RESOURCES/
In the list of files you see, click and drag KEYBOARD-EN.PLIST to the desktop to
create a copy of it.
2.
Create a separate, second backup copy of KEYBOARD-EN.PLIST somewhere safe
on your hard disk. We'll revert to this file should anything go wrong or
we want to remove the pop-up menu later.
3.
Double-click the KEYBOARD-EN.PLIST file on the desktop, which should open it
in TextEdit.
4.
The file looks complicated, but don't worry about it. Create a new line
beneath the fifth line in the file that reads <DICT> (above the line that reads
<KEY>ROMAN-ACCENT-A</KEY> ), and type the following, checking afterward to
ensure it's been typed correctly:
<KEY>ROMAN-ACCENT-Q</KEY>
<DICT>
<KEY>DIRECTION</KEY>
<STRING>RIGHT</STRING>
<KEY>KEYCAPS</KEY>
5.
Beneath this, create a new line, type <STRING> , and then immediately
(without a line break) type the characters you'd like to appear on the pop-
up menu, with a space between them (hint: hit OPTION + COMMAND + T to bring
up the Characters palette if needed—any letter or symbol you see in the
Characters palette can be inserted, including Emoji). For technical reasons,
you should add no more than nine characters in total.
