Tip 400
See the Condition of Your Battery at a Glance
This is a tip for anybody with one of the MacBook series of computers.
If you hold down OPTION and click the battery life display at the top right of
the screen, you'll be told the condition of your battery. On most Macs this
reads Normal, which means the battery is in good condition. If instead you
see Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery, there's likely a fault with
the battery, and you should take your computer for repair as soon as possible.
However, before you do that, consider resetting the System Management
Controller, as described in Tip 184, Reset Hardware Settings , on page 209 .
This will remove the possibility of the status being incorrectly reported by
corrupted system settings.
To see many more details about the battery, click the Apple menu, hold down
OPTION , and click the System Information entry on the menu. In the window
that appears, click Power in the list on the left side, and then look at the
details under the Battery Information heading on the right side.
Tip 401
Magnify Sections of Photos or PDFs Easily
When viewing photos or PDFs in Preview, you might use the magnify buttons
on the toolbar to get a better view of details. But try this instead: hit the
backtick key (left of the top number row on most keyboards, but sometimes
left of the Z key), and a magnifying glass will appear. If you have a multitouch
trackpad, you can use the pinch-and-expand gesture to make the glass zoom
in and out. Everybody else can tap the plus and minus keys (hold COMMAND
at the same time to also zoom the image/document). To get rid of the glass,
just hit the backtick key again or hit ESC .
