In-Depth Information
You can also unofficially launch apps that are installed within the main OS
X installation. It isn't intuitive to do so, but you might want to launch Safari
to be able to research a problem you're having.
While booted to the recovery system, click Utilities→Terminal, and then type
the following:
/APPLICATIONS/SAFARI.APP/CONTENTS/MACOS/SAFARI
Once you've finished, hit COMMAND + Q twice to quit Safari as well as the Termi-
nal window that launched it. This will return you to the main recovery options
dialog box. To restart the computer, click the Apple menu, and then select
the Restart option.

Expand QuickTime Player's Knowledge of File Types
This topic has largely avoided recommending third-party tools you can
download, but there are two exceptions: Windows Media Components for
QuickTime and Perian. 35 These are system add-ons that allow your computer
to play practically all movie and audio file formats. This is needed because
OS X's support for movie files doesn't go much beyond its own QuickTime
formats and DVD movie discs.
Once installed, Perian will add an entry within System Preferences (Apple
menu→System Preferences) by which you can configure some of the options
for audio output and so on (although there's usually no need to do so). Win-
dows Media Components for QuickTime includes a special player application,
accessible within the Applications view of Finder, but you can ignore this
because, as the name implies, after installation you'll find that QuickTime
Player is compatible with Windows Media files.
To play all types of media files, many people ignore QuickTime Player com-
pletely and use the third-party app VLC instead. Visit HTTP://WWW.VIDEOLAN.ORG/VLC/
DOWNLOAD-MACOSX.HTML for more information.
