Tip 346
Use the “Linen” Background on the Desktop
Apple seems to love the “linen” background. It's used as the backdrop for the
Notification Center, for example, and on Apple's iCloud website. 23 If you share
Apple's love, you can have a linen desktop background by following these
steps:
1. Open System Preferences (main menu→System Preferences), click the
Desktop & Screen Saver icon, and select the Desktop tab.
2. Leaving System Preferences open, open a Finder window, hit
SHIFT + COMMAND + G , and type the following into the dialog box that appears,
before clicking the Go button:
/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/FRAMEWORKS/APPKIT.FRAMEWORK/VERSIONS/C/RESOURCES/NSTEXTUREDFU
LLSCREENBACKGROUNDCOLOR.PNG
3. This will open a new folder with a file highlighted. Click and drag the
highlighted folder from the Finder window onto the part of the System
Preferences window showing a preview of the currently selected wallpaper.
This is at the top left of the System Preferences window.
4. Then select Tile from the drop-down list alongside the preview window.
The changes will take effect immediately.
Tip 347
Start Time Machine at the Command Line
About to do something risky with a file at the command line? Here's how to
get some Time Machine goodness from the Terminal.
Taking a Backup Snapshot
Assuming your Mac has local snapshots enabled (see Tip 160, Back Up
Without a Time Machine Disk , on page 185 ), you can force Time Machine to
take a snapshot of the system using the following command:
23. HTTP://ICLOUD.COM
