In-Depth Information
when system updates are available, so disabling it isn't advised. Remember
that if it's merely a particular application that you find irritating because it
seems to make too much use of Notification Center, you can stop the app
from using notifications within the Notifications pane of System Preferences.
However, if you really can't stand Notification Center, the following command
typed into a Terminal window will get rid of it and also remove the icon from
the top right of the screen:
LAUNCHCTL UNLOAD -W
/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/LAUNCHAGENTS/COM.APPLE.NOTIFICATIONCENTERUI.PLIST
Log out and back in again.
To restore Notification Center, the following command typed into a Terminal
window will do the trick (again, log out and back in again afterward):
LAUNCHCTL LOAD -W
/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/LAUNCHAGENTS/COM.APPLE.NOTIFICATIONCENTERUI.PLIST
Disabling iCloud
Disabling iCloud is as simple as opening System Preferences, clicking the
iCloud icon, and then clicking the Sign Out button. Alternatively, you disable
a particular aspect of iCloud on the right side of the System Preferences pro-
gram window.
To disable iCloud documents storage, which means you won't be prompted
to save files to iCloud within applications, remove the check alongside Docu-
ments & Data, although be aware this will delete all your iCloud documents
from the Mac you're using (you can make copies of the documents by following
Tip 25, Access (and Back Up) All iCloud Documents , on page 36 ) . Note that if
you're doing this merely because you're irritated at always being prompted
to save to iCloud rather than your hard disk, you might want to read Tip 93,
Stop iCloud from Being the Default , on page 97 .
Turning Off Mission Control
It's possible to deactivate Mission Control, but this will also make it difficult
to switch desktop spaces because that's one of the things Mission Control
manages. Once Mission Control is deactivated, the only way to switch desktop
spaces will be by holding down COMMAND and the Left/Right cursor keys.
Additionally, be aware that turning off Mission Control also deactivates the
Show Desktop feature.
