Tip 315
Convert Images into a PDF
Converting an image into a PDF file is as simple as opening it in Preview and
clicking Print from the File menu. Then, in the dialog box that appears, click
the PDF drop-down at the bottom left and select Save As PDF.
To do the same for a whole series of images, open them in Preview by multiple-
selecting them in Finder (that is, holding down COMMAND or SHIFT and selecting
more than one file) and then dragging them onto the Preview Dock icon. This
will open the images in a drawer to the left of the window. Select all of them
(click one of the thumbnail previews, and then hit COMMAND + A ), and click File
→Print. In the dialog box, click the PDF button before clicking the Save As
PDF option.
To avoid pictures being rotated, uncheck the Auto Rotate box in the Print
dialog box.
Tip 316
Make Only One Program Window Visible at a Time
This is a tip for those who don't find it easy to use computers (see also Tip
239, Make the Dock Show Only Running Programs , on page 264 ). This tip makes
only the currently active application window(s) visible at any given moment.
Any other program windows are automatically hidden. You can switch between
open applications as usual using the Dock.
Autohiding App Windows
To make this happen, open Terminal (open Finder, select the Applications
list, and then in the list of applications double-click Terminal within the UTILITIES
folder), and type the following:
DEFAULTS WRITE COM.APPLE.DOCK SINGLE-APP -BOOL TRUE;KILLALL DOCK
The changes will take effect the next time you click the Dock icon. Click any
Dock icon to hide all other program windows.
