In-Depth Information
Assuming that what you download from the manufacturer's website arrives
as a disk image, double-click it in the usual way so the disk image mounts
it in Finder. Then right-click the .MPKG or .PKG file representing the installation
package, and select Show Package Contents. In the Finder window that opens,
browse to the PACKAGES folder. If there isn't a PACKAGES folder, then look in the
other folders in the package, but the chances are you're out of luck and will
just have to install the entire thing in the usual way.
If there is a PACKAGES folder, look for anything that looks like it might just con-
tain the actual drivers. In the package for my Brother multifunction printer,
for example, I found two packages named with variations of BROTHER_INKJET . To
install both, I right-clicked the first package, selecting Open from the menu
in order to bypass Gatekeeper; then after installing it, I repeated the process
on the second. This gave me the printer drivers I needed but not the irritating
software that starts at boot-up and is intended to help with scanning.
Tip 258
Reveal the Desktop
Although it's a very useful feature, the Show Desktop feature isn't given its
own hotkey on Mac keyboards—unlike Mission Control and Dashboard. While
you can hit F11 to activate it ( FN +F11 on portable Macs, or perhaps CTRL + DOWN
depending on your system configuration), you might like to know that the
Mission Control hotkey (usually F3) doubles up as a Show Desktop hotkey.
Just hold COMMAND before you tap it.
Tip 259
Avoid Trackpad Confusion When a Mouse Is Used
In my experience, Apple designs its portable Macs well and positions the
trackpad to avoid accidental touching while typing. But if you're using an
external mouse, you might still find that you occasionally brush against it,
causing the mouse pointer to skitter.
