In-Depth Information
the caches might be worth trying. Don't worry—the caches will be re-created
as soon as the app next opens.
Clearing Local Caches
Start by quitting any apps that are open. Then open a Finder window, hit
SHIFT + COMMAND + G , and type the following: ~/LIBRARY/CACHES . Then drag all the files
and folders you see to the trash. Enter your login password if prompted.
Clearing Application Caches
As described earlier, ensure all applications are closed, and then open a
Finder window. Hit SHIFT + COMMAND + G , and type the following: /LIBRARY/CACHES .
Then drag all the folders and files you see in the Finder window to the trash,
typing your password when prompted, and reboot for the changes to take
effect.
Note that the first time you reboot, the system might seem slower. This is
because the caches are being rebuilt.
Tip 254
Turn the Numeric Keypad into a Launcher
If you never use the numeric keypad of your full-sized keyboard for its proper
purpose (that is, quickly typing numbers), you can turn it into a range of
hotkeys that activate various OS X functions.
This is possible because OS X sees the numeric keypad as a separate range
of keys. As far as it is concerned, hitting 3 on the numeric keypad is not the
same as hitting 3 on the main keyboard. The same is true for the other
numbers and also for the symbols on the numeric keypad.
Creating a Hotkey Shortcut
You can define new keyboard shortcuts and redefine existing ones by starting
System Preferences (Apple menu→System Preferences), selecting the Keyboard
icon, and then ensuring the Keyboard Shortcuts tab is selected.
Just select an entry in the list on the right, and then double-click the right
side of the entry. Then press the keyboard shortcut or combination you'd like
to use. Switch between categories using the list on the left.
