In-Depth Information
Note that you should never hide security or major operating system updates.
These should always been installed, no matter how long it takes. To learn
how to capture update files for manual installation on more than one comput-
er, which can save time if you have more than one Mac, see Tip 263, Manually
Manage Software Updates , on page 287 .
Tip 235
Generate Font Samples
If you have a lot of fonts installed on the system, you may find it helpful to
create a sample document displaying them all. Lots of professional designers
rely on binders full of such printed examples.
There are two simple ways of doing this, depending on whether you want a
simple or bespoke sample document.
Creating a Simple Font Sample Document
You can create a simple sample of one or more fonts, showing little more than
the upper/lowercase letters and numbers from 0 to 9, by following these
steps:
1.
Open the Font Book app, which is the Mac font manager (open Finder,
select the Applications list, and then double-click Font Book), and then
select one or more fonts (multiple fonts can be selected by holding down
COMMAND ).
2.
Click File→Print. The print dialog will open, and you'll see previewed a
simple letters and numbers sample that you can print immediately if you
want by clicking the Print button. However, by expanding the print dialog
box by clicking Show Details, you'll see more options.
3.
Ensure Default Settings is selected in the Presets drop-down list within
the print dialog box, and ensure Font Book is selected from the drop-down
list beneath the paper orientation buttons. Then select from the three
different options in the Report Type drop-down list: Catalog, Repertoire,
and Waterfall. You'll see the preview at the top left change with each
choice you make, showing the differences between the options.
