Forcing a Quit
If the app has crashed, right-clicking its Dock icon will probably show a Force
Quit menu entry. Click this to force the app to quit. If there's no Force Quit
entry, hold down OPTION , and it will appear.
You can also hold down OPTION + COMMAND and tap ESC to bring up the Force
Quit dialog box. From there you can select the app and click the Force Quit
button.
Using a Keyboard Shortcut
The following might work if the app simply won't quit, but beware that it ter-
minates the app without offering the chance to save data: click the Dock icon
for the app, and then hold down SHIFT + OPTION + COMMAND + ESC for three seconds.
You'll know instantly whether it has worked because the app will vanish.
Forcibly Rebooting the Computer
If that doesn't work and the computer is simply unresponsive, the only solution

the power button will forcibly shut down your computer (on a MacBook Air
or MacBook Pro with Retina screen, you must hit CONTROL + OPTION + COMMAND and
the power button). Be aware that you won't get a chance to save files, although
OS X will otherwise shut down correctly, avoiding the possibility of system
files becoming corrupted. Press the power button once after shutdown to
restart.
If that doesn't work, hold down the power button for five seconds. This simply
powers down the computer instantly, so, again, you won't get a chance to
save any open files. Because of the slight risk of system files getting damaged,
this method should be considered a last resort if nothing else works.

it into a file, just open Preview (open Finder, select the Applications list, and
then double-click Preview), and then hit File→New from Clipboard. This will
create a new file containing the image. Click File→Save to save the file in
