In-Depth Information
If you like to use the Edit menu to move files around, hold down the OPTION
key while accessing it (after first copying the file in the usual way), and you'll
see a Move Item Here option appear, which has the same effect as using
COMMAND + OPTION + V .
Tip 214
Avoid the Spring-Load Wait
If you drag and hover a file over the icon for a folder for long enough (in both
Finder windows and on the desktop), a new Finder window will pop out,
wherein you can see the contents and deposit the file. This feature is known
as spring-loaded folders , and you can alter the delay before the new Finder
window appears by changing the setting in Finder's Preferences dialog box
(application menu→Preferences, and ensure the General pane is selected).
However, if you're in a rush, simply drag and hover the file as described, and
then hit SPACE to cause the new Finder window to spring out immediately.
Dock icons are spring-loaded too—if an app is running, you can drag a file
onto its icon, and after a few seconds, the app will switch to Application
Windows mode of Mission Control, and you can drop the file into whichever
of the app's window you want. However, if you hit SPACE as soon as you drag
the file to the Dock icon, it'll instantly switch to Application Windows mode
with no delay. You can then hover the dragged file over a window and hit SPACE
again to make that app window instantly come to the foreground, ready for
you to drop the file onto.
(For what it's worth and although it's hard to see a situation where this could
prove useful, if an app isn't running, hitting SPACE while you're dragging a file
on top of it will cause the app to launch instantly.)
Drag a file onto a Dock stack, and within a few seconds, a Finder window will
temporarily open showing that folder for as long as you're dragging the file
(that is, dragging a file onto the DOWNLOADS stack, and a Finder window appears
showing the contents of your DOWNLOADS folder). Hit SPACE , however, and the
Finder window will pop up instantly.
