View Tech Info When Logging In
Most Mac users are familiar with the login screen, which appears whenever
you boot or reboot your Mac. Here are a handful of hacks to add info and text
to it, although see also Tip 345, Create a Login Message , on page 354 .
Add Login Screen Message
You can add a sentence or paragraph of text that will appear on the login
screen. This can be useful when using MacBooks to set an “if lost” or anti-
theft message, such as your phone number. Don't underestimate such low-

aware that it's stolen.
To set a login message, open System Preferences (Apple menu→System Pref-
erences), click the Security & Privacy tab, and then select the General tab.
Unlock System Preferences if necessary by clicking the padlock icon at the
bottom left, and then put a check in the box Show a Message When The
Screen is Locked. Then click Set Lock Message, and type your message—
something like this will do: “If you're reading this, this Mac is lost or stolen.
Please phone 555-1234 to arrange return.” Remember that hitting
OPTION + COMMAND + T will open the Character Selection window, and any of the
symbols there can be used.
Once done, click OK. The message will now be set. To remove it, simply remove
the check alongside Show a Message When The Screen is Locked.
