In-Depth Information
Adding an Eject Icon to the Menu Bar
Open Finder, hit SHIFT + COMMAND + G , and then type /SYSTEM/LIBRARY/CORESERVICES/MENU
EXTRAS . Then double-click EJECT.MENU . The new button will instantly appear at
the top right of the menu bar near the clock and will stay across reboots.
Clicking it will show a menu that allows you to eject discs from the CD/DVD
drive.
Holding down OPTION while clicking the icon and then selecting the Eject option
beneath will force the CD/DVD drive to eject, even if it doesn't believe it has
a disk in it—useful for when discs get “stuck” (see also Tip 231, Eject a Stuck
CD/DVD Disc , on page 257 ) .
To get rid of the new icon at any time, hold down COMMAND and click and drag
it away from the menu. Upon releasing the mouse button, it will disappear
instantly.
Adding an Eject Icon to Finder
Right-click the toolbar within Finder, and select the Customize Toolbar option.
Then, in the dialog box that appears, click and drag the Eject icon to a blank
spot within the toolbar area (the Eject icon is in the top row of the dialog box
icon listing).
In the future, all you need to do is select the CD/DVD disc in the list of Devices
in the sidebar of Finder and then click this icon on the toolbar. Note that this
button can also be used to eject things like USB memory sticks in the same
way—just select them in the Devices list, and click the button.
To remove the new icon in the future, hold down COMMAND and drag it up from
Finder. Release the mouse button, and it'll disappear in a puff of smoke.
Tip 193
Access Hidden Menu Options
Holding down SHIFT , CONTROL , or OPTION while viewing virtually any application or
system menu will display various alternatives to standard menu choices. For
example, selecting a file and then holding down OPTION and clicking Finder's
File menu changes the Open option to Open and Close Window, which will
open the selected file and then close the Finder window immediately afterward.
