Tip 183
Jump Between Views in Finder
Finder offers four separate ways of viewing your files and folders: Icon view,
List view, Column view, and Cover Flow. You can switch between them using
the icons on Finder's toolbar (just above the file display area), but a quicker
way to do so is to hold down COMMAND and press 1, 2, 3, or 4 for Icon, List,
Column, and Cover Flow views, respectively.
Tip 184
Reset Hardware Settings
Sometimes your Mac's hardware might start doing odd things. If you're having
hardware problems, you might try one of two methods to reset various hard-
ware settings.
Resetting the System Management Controller
The System Management Controller (SMC) controls power management
hardware and lights on your Mac. If your Mac has problems such as constantly
blowing its fans at full speed, refusing to turn off when you close the lid (if
it's a portable Mac, of course), or LED lights doing odd things (particularly
those that show battery charge), then you might try resetting the SMC.
To do so on a portable Mac that has a battery that can't be removed, shut
down the computer and ensure the power cable is attached. Then hold down
SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION and press the power button. Release, and then restart your
computer in the usual way.
On a Mac with a battery that can be removed, shut down the computer and
remove the battery. Disconnect the power supply, and then press and hold
the power button for five seconds. Then reconnect, reattach everything, and
boot as usual.
If you have an iMac or Mac Pro, simply shut down the computer and remove
the power cable for at least fifteen seconds. Then reattach it and boot as
usual.
