Tip 81
Use Facebook Chat
The Messages app can be configured as a Facebook chat client, which is to
say you'll be able to chat to your Facebook friends from within Messages, and
the messages will appear for them when they're logged into Facebook. This
is possible because Facebook chat uses the Jabber protocol, which is a feature
offered within Messages.
Setting up Facebook chat can be done whether or not you've configured
Facebook within the Mail, Contacts & Calendars section of System Preferences.
Adding Facebook Chat to Messages
Here's how to set it up:
1.
Before starting, you must find out your Facebook username. Often this
is the latter part of the web address you see when you view your own
profile in Facebook (for example, http://facebook.com/ john.smith ). 8
2.
Open Messages, and then open its Preferences dialog box (Messages→
Preferences). Select the Accounts tab in the Preferences dialog box.
3.
Click the plus icon at the bottom left of the dialog box. In the new dialog
box that slides down, select Jabber from the Account Type drop-down
list.
4.
In the Account Name field, type the Facebook username you discovered,
followed by @CHAT.FACEBOOK.COM . In other words, if my username were JOHN.SMITH ,
I would type JOHN.SMITH@CHAT.FACEBOOK.COM .
5.
In the password field, type your Facebook password, and then click the
Done button (there's no need to fill in any of the Server Options fields—
these fields are automatically detected).
And that's all that's needed! You'll be logged into Facebook chat immediately.
To see a list of your Facebook friends who are online and have chat activated,
click Window→Buddies. To chat to any of them, double-click their entries
within the list.
