Press the Tab key. The tools and panels are reduced to thin vertical
strips along the left and right edges of the screen. The options bar
disappears completely.
press Shift+tab
to hide all panels
except for the tools
panel.

Hover the cursor over the strip along the right edge of the screen.
The panels are revealed. Move the cursor away from the panels and
they will auto-hide again.

Press Tab again to show the tools, options bar, and panels and keep
them displayed continuously.
setting Application Preferences
Photoshop has a number of configurable settings, or preferences, dealing with
many aspects of the program. At this point you won't know what many of the
preferences do, but at least you will know where to look if and when you want to
change how Photoshop works. Most applications have preferences, and Mac OS
and Windows differ in how you access them. Let's open the Preferences dialog box.

On Mac OS, application preferences are located in the applica-
tion menu. On Windows, preferences are located in the Edit menu.
Preferences are further categorized in cascading submenus (see
Figure 2.4). On Mac OS, choose Photoshop a Preferences a
General. On Windows, choose Edit a Preferences a General.
