In-Depth Information
Increasing the ISO value in your camera's menu will enable you to use faster
shutter speeds and smaller apertures. However, at extremely high ISO values
(above 2,000), digital cameras start to experience problems with noise , or ran-
dom fluctuations of light intensity. You should therefore set your camera to use
the lowest ISO value that yields the shutter speeds and apertures you need.
scanning tips
Two-dimensional matter is best captured on a scanner (see Figure 1.17) rather
than with a camera. Like cameras, scanners use light sensors to digitize images.
However, scanners supply their own light in a moving bar that scans station-
ary subjects. By moving the bar very slowly, the scanner can record an image at
incredibly high resolutions.
the key to using
scanners success-
fully is never to scan
more area or resolu-
tion than is needed
for the specific use
you have in mind for
the image.
FIGURe 1.17 Flatbed scanner
Scanners come with their own software supplied by their manufacturers. This
software will allow you to specify which region of the scanning bed you wish to
sample and at what resolution (see Chapter 3 for a discussion of resolution).
