In-Depth Information
saving for the Web
If you are preparing images for the Web, then file size must be taken into
account. Nobody wants to wait for large images to download on a web page, and
if you make people wait, chances are you will lose your audience. In the follow-
ing steps, you will learn options for optimizing image file size within the Save
For Web dialog box.

Objective
1. Open Painting.psd from this topic's Downloads page at www.sybex
.com/go/photoshopessentials (see Figure 16.5). The original is a
2.22 MB file.
O

FIGURe 16.5 Original digital painting of the author's house
2. Choose File a Save For The Web. Select the Optimized tab and select
WBMP from the Optimized File Format drop-down (second from
the top of the Save For Web dialog box). Figure 16.6 shows an image
made of exactly two colors: black and white. Notice that the file size
in the lower-left corner, 94.93 KB, is just 4 percent of the original
size. This is the maximum compression that is possible at a constant
image size. However, we have lost all color and tonal information, so
WBMP is really only practical for newsprint and faxes.
O
ideal image file
formats for the
web:JPG,GIF,BMP,
and pnG.
