tonal gradations
Tone refers to a particular quality in brightness or color
value. Images that play with gradations in tone have a soft, sensuous feeling.
This effect comes from subtle variations in mid-tones.
brightness and contrast
Images that contrast light with dark invoke a dra-
matic quality. Images with extremes in brightness and darkness by definition
don't include most of the mid-tones. Thus this theme is the opposite of the
theme of tonal gradations.
