selecting with Lassos
Those outside North America might not be familiar with the word lasso ; it is a
loop of rope a cowboy might throw around a bull to capture it. Thankfully, the
type of lassoing we do in Photoshop is far less dangerous. You have three lassos
in your toolbox: regular, polygonal, and magnetic.

Objective
Using the Lasso
You'll find that it takes a steady hand to use the lasso effectively. As mentioned
in Chapter 4, it is much more natural to use a tablet as an input device than a
mouse, and this is especially true when using the Lasso tool. In the following
steps you'll lasso a hot chili pepper.
1. Go to the topic's Downloads page at www.sybex.com/go
/photoshopessentials and browse to Chapter 7. Open
the file Peppers.jpg .
2. Zoom into the image by pressing Cmd+= a few times.
3. Press L to select the Lasso tool. Pick a pepper (no need for a peck of
pickled, just one will do) and lasso it by carefully tracing its edges.
This is much easier said than done. Notice that the pointer is at the
tip of the lasso icon. Press the Caps Lock key for the precise cursor (a
cross) if you prefer. Don't worry if you make a mistake (see Figure 7.5).
FIGURe 7.5 Lassoing takes a steady hand, but you don't have to get a
perfect selection on the first attempt.
