Fonts can be broken down into several categories (see Figure 6.2). The pan-
gram “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” displays every letter of the
alphabet at least once. Alternative pangrams are available in multiple languages
for examining letters in typography.

Serif fonts have small horizontal lines, or wedges, at the end of some letter
strokes that originate from a time when letters were painted with a brush. Serif
fonts are generally easier to read than sans-serif fonts ( sans is French for with-
out ) because the serifs provide visual cues that help the eye track horizontally
