FIGURe 4.23 Making a pressure-sensitive brushstroke
Controlling bristle tip brushes with tilt
sensitivity
Bristle tip brushes are the most sophisticated brushes because they change
shape depending upon how you hold the stylus. If you have a pressure- and tilt-
sensitive tablet, try the following steps.
1. Press Cmd (.)+Delete on the Mac or Ctrl+Backspace on Windows to
fill the canvas with the white background color.
2. Open the Color panel and choose a red color by dragging along the
color strip.
3. Scroll down in the Brush Presets panel and locate the icons that look
like real brushes: These are the bristle tip brushes. Select the second
bristle tip brush (its tooltip reads Round Blunt Medium Stiff). Drag
the Size slider to 25 px. Set Flow to 10% on the options bar.
4. Notice that a preview window appears in the upper-left corner of the
canvas. As you tilt the stylus, the preview updates in real time (this
will not happen with a mouse). Make a few horizontal and vertical
brushstrokes, taking care to tilt the stylus differently on each stroke
(see Figure 4.24). You can get a wide variety of marks by modulat-
ing the pressure and tilt of the stylus, just as you would with a real
paintbrush.
