Painting with a brush
The Brush tool has far more nuance than the Pencil tool. Before we delve into
the complexities of the Brush tool (which we will do in the section “Exploring
Brushes” later in this chapter), let us get acquainted with the most basic brush
first: the default soft round brush. In the following steps you will paint the
sketch you developed in the previous section.
1. Open your version of Sketch.tif if it is not already open.
2. Select the Color Fill 1 layer and then click the Add A New Layer but-
ton. Rename this layer Painting .
this file is also avail-
able on the topic's
downloads page.
3. Toggle off layer Color Fill 1. Press I to select the Eyedropper tool.
Select 31 By 31 Average from the Sample Size drop-down on the
options bar. Sample a color from a surface of the original 3D render-
ing; it becomes the new foreground color. Toggle on Color Fill 1.
4. Select the Brush tool. Right-click the canvas and the Brush Preset
picker appears. Select the first brush (Soft Round) and then drag the
Size slider to 15 px and the Hardness slider to 50% (see Figure 4.12).
