In-Depth Information
Security link located in the upper-right corner of the Cell Data pane of the role editor. The
link opens the cube browser for you, which allows you to browse the data as a particular
user or as a member of a certain role:
1. Select the Change User icon, which will show you a Security Context dialog box for
the Warehouse and Sales cube.
2. On the resulting dialog, select the role you want to use to browse the data from the
Roles box, as shown in Figure 37.3.
FIGURE 37.3
In the Security Context dialog, select the role you want to test.
After you have chosen the role, you can browse the cube as if you were a member of
that role. Now drag the Store Sales measure and drop it in the data area of the
browser, and then drag the Store dimension and drop it in the rows area. When you
drill down into Store dimension, as shown in Figure 37.4, you can see that cells associ-
ated with the USA and Mexico members have valid values, but the value of the cell asso-
ciated with Canada is #N/A .
By default, Analysis Services returns the #N/A (Not Available) string as a value for cells
denied to the user by cell security. A client application can configure Analysis Services and
specify the format in which it gets secured values by using the Secured Cell Value connec-
tion property. Instead of #N/A , secured values can be shown as NULL , 0 , #SEC , or a cell error.
NOTE
You don't have to use the tools shipped with Analysis Services to test the roles. If you
have a client application that enables you to specify a connection string property, you
can define the Roles or EffectiveUserName connection properties as follows:
Roles=TestRole; or EffectiveUserName=redmond\irinag; (for example).
