DAY 25
San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas
The next morning I was up early and on the colectivo van (mini bus) headed to San
Cristóbal de Las Casas.
San Cristóbal was Mayan country. Indigenous folk, dressed in bright blues, greens, oranges,
yellows and reds, were a major percentage of the population. Ancient, artistic hippies from
the 1960s, who had once “turned on, tuned in and dropped out,” and now had a commercial
bent, made San Cristóbal their home and ran bed and breakfast inns. I remembered hippies
in San Francisco buying old clothes from Goodwill and second-hand stores, mixing and
matching, creating colorful apparel. Now the garments appeared new and the wearer old.
