In-Depth Information
Landa, the last of the missions to be built, was more complex than Jalpan and venerated
the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. It stood brightly painted in deep red and ochre.
Two intellectual defenders of the faith, both sitting at their writing desks, Duns Scot and
the Blue Nun, were depicted over the entrance.
Tilco, the most remote, was the most elaborate and most cheerful mission. Cherubs and
angels, some playing instruments, some smiling with joy, gave one a sense of heaven. St.
Joseph, dressed in brightly colored robes, carried the Christ Child, who pulled on his beard.
In this quiet village the local taxi driver played chess in the back seat with a friend.
Tancoyol stood out, with its atrium walls decorated with conical “turk's heads” and finials.
The color scheme was ochre and white, but was still brilliant. The Virgin was missing from
her niche, and the dominant scene was St. Francis receiving the stigmata from the Divine.
