He said, "That's okay," and started to give me my 20-peso note. Of course, I was not going
to cut the fare down; he was a friendly, courteous driver. I said, "Oh, no, you keep the 20."
I waved good-bye, entered Chaires and ordered a cake. I reached into my vacant pocket
and realized, "I was just privileged to witness an Oscar-winning performance of charade
and deception."
I lost cash, personal notes and my student registration card from Academia Hispano Amer-
icano in San Luís Miguel de Allende, my California Alumni Card, and my ego took a hit.
Credit cards and ID were safe in my money belt.
It was a surprise. I wasn't in a crowd where I would have been alert. I was in San Luís Po-
tosi, feeling at home, safe and secure. I wondered, “How often have I been a target when
circumstances didn't play into the hands of a thief?”
Often I've stated, “Paranoia is the mother of a safe trip.” I forgot my own advice. I dug
into my money belt and paid for the Black Forest cake.
The Selva Negra cake was delicious. You get what you pay for, and it cost plenty!
