never included on package labeling is the treatment of the people
whose labor produced it. To truly stand up for those who are si-
lenced, mistreated, harassed, intimidated, sickened, injured, and
sometimes killed in factory farms and slaughterhouses is to look at
their suffering as an ingredient in most of the meat, egg, and dairy
products that line our supermarket shelves. No matter how cheap
the price tag may be, it is not worth participating in the system-
atic exploitation of the nation's factory farm and slaughterhouse
workers.
We would all benefit by remembering Cesar Chavez's simple, yet
eloquent words: “Only when we have become nonviolent towards
all life will we have learned to live well with others.”
