Sara Kubersky and Tom O'Hagan
Our paths to a cruelty-free lifestyle were different: while Tom was
guided by a philosophical and ethical objection to the violence
inherent in the industries that raised and killed animals for meat,
eggs, and milk, Sara was led by a direct, emotional response to
the suffering of animals. After we individually and independently
became vegan, we met while Tom was shopping for cruelty-free
shoes at MooShoes, the Manhattan vegan boutique owned by
Sara and her sister Erica. Sara helped Tom find nonleather shoes—
both then and now.
Years later, after we married, we decided it was time for us to
share our lives and our family of four-legged companions with a
child. When our son Leo was born, there was never any debate
between us that we would raise him in the healthiest and most
compassionate way we knew. We knew we wanted to raise him
just as we had chosen to live. Our decision was based on a simple
question: what parents don't want the very best for their kids? Our
answer was equally simple: raising children who are compassion-
ate to animals—ethically, in action, and dietarily—gives them the
healthiest possible start on life.
Some may disagree that animal-free diets are the most
