Be sure to place an initial column marker in front of the first variable. In
Figure A14.4, we have marked out the columns for the variables.
A.10.5 STEP 5
Step 5 asks you to provide a name for each of the variables in the data file
and to specify the data format from the drop-down menu. This window is
presented in Figure A14.5. The data format for most or all of the variables
you will be analyzing is likely to be Numeric . For the naming process, click
on the column in the bottom panel that contains the variable you wish
to name. Then type the name in the top panel. When you select a new
column, the name you just assigned will be seen at the top of the grid.
A.10.6 STEP 6
The sixth and final step in this process addresses housekeeping issues.
Its window is shown in Figure A14.6. You need to answer the following
three questions after which you click Finish to have the new SPSS data
file displayed on your desktop. It is advisable to do a Save As immediately
after the data file is available.
