A.10.3 STEP 3
Step 3 (see Figure A14.3) asks the following questions. After answering
them, click on Next toreachthewindowforStep4.
Where does the first case start? The answer is very often at line 1.
How many lines represent a single case? You can use any number of
lines to record the data from the participants. Each line is called a
record. The key here is that you must structure the data in exactly
the same way for each participant. In our sample text file shown in
Figure A13, we have twenty-seven lines (records) for each case.
How many cases do you want to import? The answer here is usually
All of the cases .
A.10.4 STEP 4
This step is more complicated to explain than to accomplish. The Step 4
window is shown in Figure A14.4. SPSS now has sufficient information to
lay out the numbers in the rows of the data file. All you need to do here
is to specify which values comprise variables, that is, where the columns
are to be located. Thus, 001 is the identification code for the first case
and comprises the first column. Click in the column to produce a column
demarcation (a blue line) and drag the line to where you need to have it.
