of 1-5 are female teenagers, those with identification code numbers of
6-10 are male teenagers, those with identification code numbers of 11-
15 are females in their middle twenties, and those with identification
code numbers of 16-20 are males in their middle twenties. Their respec-
tive jealously scores are shown under emotional attraction and physical
attraction; ratings were made on a seven-point response scale with higher
values indicating greater amounts of expressed jealousy.
Figure 14.2 shows the cell means for our numerical example. These
cell means tie directly to the highest order interaction in the design, in this
case the three-way interaction. If this three-way interaction is statistically
significant, it is these means that we will want to plot and that will serve
as the basis of the simple effects testing; if the three-way interaction is not
statistically significant, then we may need to collapse some of these cells
to deal with one of the two-way interactions or the main effects.
