10.2 Assume we are interested in the effects of conversational affective into-
nation on conversation memory. Participants were presented with three
brief videotaped conversation conditions, which were randomly counter-
balanced: happy, neutral, or angry. The content of each conversation was
kept the same for each condition, but the intonation and pausal contours
of the dialogue were varied for particular utterances to create the three
conversational treatments. The dependent variable was the total number of
idea units recalled from the conversation. The data are as follows:
