8.9 PERFORMING THE OMNIBUS ANALYSIS IN SPSS
8.9.1 STRUCTURING THE DATA FILE
The SPSS data file containing the variables for the analysis of the numer-
ical example we have been using throughout this chapter is shown in
Figure 8.6. That data file is structured as follows. The first variable (col-
umn) is a subject identification code that we have named subid .Next
are the independent variables. We have given them arbitrary codes (val-
ues) to represent our categories. For gender , females are coded as 1 and
males are coded as 2; for reside , large city, small town, and rural com-
munity are coded as 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The final column holds
the dependent variable for the analysis. We have named this variable
lonely . In this column are the scores on the loneliness inventory for each
participant.
8.9.2 STRUCTURING THE ANALYSIS
We will use the SPSS GLM Univariate module to perform the analysis.
From the main menu, select Analyze
