6.6.1 THE DATA FILE
A portion of the data file for this numerical example is shown in Figure 6.1.
The first column (not named) contains the line numbers supplied by SPSS.
The next column contains a variable named
subid
, which is simply an
arbitrary code number assigned to each participant so that we can verify
the original data if necessary;
subid
is short for “subject identification,”
and we use this variable in all of our data files. The variable
group
indicates
to which group the cases belong. We have used
value labels
(codes for the
group
variable)of0,2,4,6,and8torepresentourgroupsbecausethe
codes inform us directly of the number of months of study the students
put in. Finally, the variable
satscore
represents the dependent variable and
is, as the name implies, the SAT score (actually the average of Verbal and
Quantitative) for each student.
