In Hampton's throne, each piece on the left (B.C.) matches a corresponding
structure in the same position on the right (A.D.), built with the same
symmetry to the last intricate detail—but proclaiming a different message.
The structures are paired to unite Old Testament proclamations about the law
and commandments with New Testament statements about salvation and
grace. To cite just one example (Figure 5.6), a table on the left bears the
following plaque (cited here in Hampton's arrangement and spelling):

I am the Lord thy God

The themes of time's arrow and time's cycle, and their necessary union for
any comprehensive view of our history and our estate, must be pervasive and
powerful indeed if they could so motivate, in so essentially similar a way, the
visions of both a great seventeenth-century scholar, private confessor to the
King of England, and a poor black janitor in modern Washington, D.C.
